Fishman is a veteran journalist, book author and former derivatives trader who is a leading expert on global demographic change and the world’s workforce, the People’s Republic of China and its development as a world power and on regional economic development amid a globalized economy. His current research, for an upcoming volume from W.W. Norton explores how concrete and other materials have fashioned modern life, the world economy and the future of the planet. Fishman has served as consultant to governments and leaders, and has been a speechwriter for CEOs and for the head of state of one of the world’s largest countries. He has given more than 400 keynote addresses to audiences worldwide.
In his writing, Fishman is noted for taking seemingly complex topics – particularly how global economic trends influence people’s everyday experiences – and making them understandable and meaningful for a general audience. In his international bestseller, China, Inc.: How the Rise of the Next Superpower Challenges America and the World, Fishman describes the effects of China’s recent emergence as a world power on the lives and businesses of people across the globe. In addition to the success of China, Inc. in America, the book has been translated into twenty-five languages.
Fishman’s book, Shock of Gray, The Aging of the World’s Population and How it Pits Young Against Old, Child Against Parent, Worker Against Boss, Company Against Rival, and Nation Against Nation has been wildly serialized in the U.S. and abroad. A revised edition was released in China in 2019 where it became a top-ten bestseller. Shock of Gray discusses how the aging of the world’s population drives globalization and changes nearly every important relationship we have, as family members, workers and bosses and as citizens of our communities, nations and the world. Fishman reported much of the book in the State of Florida, which he argues is at the vanguard of a seismic demographic and social shift.
Fishman has been a fellow at the think tank for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a visiting scholar at Stanford University’s Center on Longevity and a fellow at the University of Chicago’s Neubauer Collegium. He has also been faculty director and lecturer with programs for global executives through Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business. A former floor trader and member of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, he ran his own trading firm until 1992.
Fishman has been featured on ABC, CNN, Fox, the BBC, CNBC, PBS, NPR, Public Radio International, and Sky News (UK), among many others. Fishman’s essays and reports appear in many of the world’s most prominent journals, including The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Money, The Atlantic, Fast Company, Harper’s, and The Sunday Times (London). He was an Op-Ed columnist for USA Today and a member of the paper’s Board of Contributors for 25 years.
Mr. Fishman has lived and worked in Japan and Indonesia. He is a graduate of Princeton University and currently lives in Chicago.
